Situated in the heart of the Limousin region of France is what can only be described as the most historic chateau in the central of France and amongst a handful of one of the most historic Chateaux in France, fully restored and ready to turn up and move into.
The chateau was built in the 16th century, beginning in 1533, on the site of an earlier fortress dating from the 12th century, itself rebuilt between 1407 and 1409. The castle was restored again at the end of the 15th century.
In 1605, King Henry IV of Francespent a night at the chateau and currently a bed is still sited at the original placing of where he slept. In 1666, it housed the King's daughter laGrandeMademoiselle, who recalled her brief stay here in her Memoirs.
In 1768, the castle passed into the hands of the marquis Doublet de Persan who, financially ruined, had to sell it on the eve of the Revolution. Various subsequent owners neglected its upkeep. In 1860, the new owner was forced to carry out repairs including entirely rebuilding a collapsed tower.
Privately owned, the castle has been listed since 9 May 1946 as a monumenthistorique ( Grade 1) by the French Ministry of Culture.
The chateau itself comprises of approx 1200 sqm of living space surrounded by water moats and 12 hectares of grounds of which 7 hectares is water with 2 large lakes, mill pond and the large moat. The whole chateau has benefited from a 5 year Historic Monument renovation program (1999-2004): “16th century history, 21st century luxury”. Superb 17th c orangey and further period outbuildings in need of some renovation, full planning permission has been granted to develop and build authentic buildings on the site to create a large 100 bedroom holiday retreat/ luxury spa resort, with the full support available from the local authorities. Although very secluded access is easy from motorway, railway, airport of Limoges or even to arrive by private helicopter.
